Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
I'm a newly chosen photographer for my university course.

I need to find a website where I can upload, and where others can download the pictures I've taken. It would be important that the site won't compress the images too much and that I can put the photo albums under some kind of viewing restrictions.

I'm familiar with Photobucket, but the download function seems to have some problems with it.. Any suggestions?

Screw photobucket.

Use Flickr. You can not only upload your images, but you can also allow others to easily download the original file as well. Depending on your usage you may need to sign up for a paid account, but it's worth it. IIRC, only $25/year.
My .02, IANAL, YMMV etc.

Preferably free.

For free, I'll second Flickr. Some people don't fancy the bloggy interface, but I don't mind. Having contacts is very nice, it lets me easily keep track of photos from interesting people. Comments: always nice having some people appreciate them :) You may need upgrade someday, but let's face it - $25 is nothing.

It is for a poor student :D I might be able to split the cost though.

Flickr sucks, and looks like some high school kid designed it. I know Flickr sucks because I have an account there.

Photobucket works just fine, I have been using it for years and it's the host I use 98% of the time..

you can also use google picasa

I'm a student as well  I've just gotten my earnings from this summer as well as my student loan... so I'm pretty well covered :)

Why do you dislike it so much? Other than the design, I mean?

Except when I try to download pics from there they come out all disfigured and compressed.

That's because Photobucket sucks.

And compresses your images.

Sometimes in life you get what you pay for. ;)

I use flickr and I'm happy with it. The only thing I wish is that the main interface had a black background instead of white.. instead you need to specifically zoom in on the image once you're viewing it to get the dark background. Other than that it's great, max file size 18mb (_huge_ jpg, I think I've only had to downsample once), a few different layers of permissions (so you can decide who sees what, and at what resolution), and a really nice organizer/tagger dealie. The free account is actually pretty nice, it has some restrictions on number of uploads per month and such, but they're generous. If you're careful you probably won't have to upgrade.

And photobucket does suck.

Then the problem is at your end.

When I post edits, the edits are on photobucket.

I can link my pics to this forum for example just fine. That is not the problem. The problem is when I try to download the pics onto my computer. Then they come out streched and comressed to like 200kb size.

You need a pro account to download the original file.
