In the lower right-hand side of my photo, on the lower part of the red swing coat, there's an artificial repeating pattern artifact that occurred. (Just below the doll's left hand; follow the armline down.)

It's not on the coat itself, and I think I've seen similar artifacts in photos of iridescent fabric before.

My questions:

1) What's causing it?

2) How can I fix it, either preventively or in post?

Any help appreciated. Thanks. :)

Moire would be my guess. It can be fixed in post, but is difficult. Perhaps shooting the doll at a slight angle and rotating it back in post, though, this will likely just result in the pattern getting worse else showing up elsewhere. Because the fabric is anisotropic, slightly changing the lighting might help, again, though, it might just crop up elsewhere. You could also try these things and if it does show up elsewhere, just layer it back in, perhaps on "luminance" mode.

Honestly, I'd just ignore it. Even with you're description of the problem, it took me a while to spot it. It's probably just one of those things that you notice because you're familiar with the subject.

I agree; it's very slight moire. Rotating the camera can help. So can moving to a different distance. It's NOT all that visible in this shot. It's difficult to predict when it will occur.

Thanks. :) And I learned a new useful word, anisotropic. Appreciate both responses!
