Here are the wierd storm photos from this summer (July 2011) Unedited.

I took these photos while storm spotting in July 2011 just West of the city. There are from the 2nd severe storm out of 3 that passed through the area in same day. This is the first time to happen in over 30 years according to officials from the city. These are NOT edited as to show the spectacle that I saw. It was a wierd feeling to be out there watching for the storms and have this happen. It was actually creepy. This storm did cause damage in the city on the West hill with trees down on a camper and house, other trees down, power lines down, as well as flooding. No injures though.

If you hadn't told me this was a storm I would have thought you were just taking pictures of the clouds. There isn't anything in these pictures dramatic enough to make me think its a horrible storm. The ground in both photos look very underexposed - it could be my monitor though. There just isn't anything of interest in these photos. You have a field (?) and sky in the first and the road and sky in the second. There is nothing in these photos to draw the viewer in....I think that doing some research on composition would have a huge benefit!

You need to have something in the foreground. Pretty clouds in the background isn't going to make a good photograph.

You should photograph whatever you want and regardless of what anybody tells you, you should do what makes you happy.

For these images, like I said, I would have been happy with them as a background to a subject.

My advice, pick a subject... hubcaps, trashcans, mailboxes, whatever....Then spend at least one week where the only think you photograph is that one subject. Try to find new ways of taking photos of whatever subject you pick. After that week, come back and show us. I bet you'll have some good stuff...

I will try that after the holidays as this next 2 weeks are going to get busy for me starting Wednesday. Work, vehicle in the shop 1-2 days coming up for repairs, another family gathering to visit with a relative who moved to Japan 4 years ago & comes home 1 time a year. I will try to squeeze it in before that if I can and let everyone know. Thanks. I also have some misc. photos that I have taken with a tripod this year that I was thinking of posting to see if anything thinks they are better than some of these new ones.

Sorry, should have clarified. After the holidays and you take the pics you need to take for memories, that is when, IMO, you should pick one subject, and commit to taking photos of only it for around a week or so. If you haven't gotten the shots you need, add another week. If that doesn't work, pick another subject.

Like I said, Mailboxes, hubcaps, trashcans, all make readily available subjects, and it can be pretty interesting around Christmas Time. Just try different things. Challenge yourself.

Honestly, I'm just thinking you may be a little bit too inexperienced and underequipped for the Christmas Lights thing. That's okay...there is always next year.

Actually, you can do HDR without a DSLR. All you need is a few images exposed at different exposure levels.

This can be done with just about any camera. Either way, at this point, it's not a recommendation I would agree with. Very little upside and it just confuses the issues.

A tip: Either edit your photos before posting, or if you feel they are acceptable as is, post them without saying they were unedited. A declared "unedited" photo is like saying "I didn't care enough to bother", which is kinda like painting yourself red and tossing yourself into the ring with the bull on an enthusiast site.

manahem, the reason I specifically labeled these as unedited is that everyone that I have shown them to before here kept asking me if I edited them to make the color look this way. I's sorry if you think this was not a good idea.
