Its hard to take these from the stands and not get the glass in the shot.

What are you using? I'm going to be shooting hockey this season also.

I shot a far amount of hockey last year, and I found that it was easier to get down and close to the glass. Not sure about down in the states, but up here all of the rinks now have the netting above the glass and it is a royal pain to shoot through.
The lighting in most arenas sucks as well, I found it almost necessary to set a custom white balance for each one.
For lenses I think most would recommend the 70-200 f2.8 and/or a 24-70 f2.8, you will need fast glass for lack of light.

YOu need to find a way to up the exposure in these, either a higher ISO,a larger aperture (f5.3 is way too small for the arena lighting), or both so you can also get faster shutter speeds. They also look soft with the sharpest area of focus being the boards behind them, but that might be part of your exposure issues.

Get on the bench if you can. It's a good angle, and no glass in the way. You may need to wear a helmet. Nice capture on the flex of the stick. Try not to have so much negative space behind the subject. maybe crop? I'm learning myself, keep shooting. Trust me, most D or I league players would love to have shots from their games. When I shoot my buddies after my game, the other team always want copies. I don't have the heart to tell them I only shot my buddies since I know them, and I basically fill the frame with them every chance I get.

Sigma 70-200 2.8 is what I shoot with as well. our rink has some good lighting.

I haven't been on this forum for quite some time, but thought I would add my 2 cents. Hockey shots are ok, should be cropped much tighter, too much empty space. Shooting through the netting is not an issue, depending on the lens, if you shoot at 200mm-300mm it is not a problem. Shooting through the glass is only a challenge if it has a dark tint or it's the cheap glass. You can usually find a pretty clean spot to shoot through in the corners. As for selling photos to players, don't be surprised if no one buys, people like to look at themselves, but they also like free, and it doesn't matter how amazing the shots may be. If just are using gear that is capable of a higher iso, use it, you're not going to stop a lot of action under 400th sec, faster the lenses the better, as people have mentioned, 2.8 is good. I try and shoot around 3.2.

Just practice, and enjoy, don't get frustrated if they don't look like they are what you see in the magazines.
