How to stole a flash, Hypersync sports result

Its my best sport shot, compo the dude is not in the trees and perfectly placed in the middle of is trick between kicker and landing, hypersync flash perfect position, nothing overexposed and all crips ...


What is special about this shot

I stole the other guy flash with the Hypersync technique... heheheh Even at 1/1600 shutter speed I got the flash at the right place in the picture witch is a miracle when you know that the canon 60d can only catch a flash on the full frame at max 250 ... The exposition zone exactly match the dude back witch was the exact spot I wanted to expose with the external light source ... lucky me.

Yes, but the main point here is that my shutter is a 1600 and the max sync with an external flash to cover the full frame of your photo with a canon 60D is 250.

You can see that the back of the dude is covered by the flash but in the picture the flash that the guy has on is camera is off.

So at 1600 in burst mode I really had the luck to catch the perfect flash spot on the frame .... The best way to explain it is this video

We understand what hypersync and high speed flash are. Most of us don't need the video, let alone need it posted twice. What I think a lot of people are having a hard time understanding is what's so special about it. So you caught another guy's flash in your 1/1600 sec exposure time. That's cool.

Though to play devil's advocate, not nearly as "lucky" as you might think. Depending on what flash he's using, he's probably firing at near full-power given the conditions. At full power you've got a much longer flash duration, about 1/200 sec. That means at 1/1600 shutter speed you essentially had 8 instances in his flash duration where you could have fired off a shot and gotten the same effect.

Still, good shot, and good timing with the trees. It was lucky to catch his flash in your shot, but math says you weren't quite as lucky as you might think.

That video does a awful job explaining it and your post is extremely confusing that you simply were able to capture the other person's flash.

When I first read it, it seemed like you snuck an external flash into an area where you weren't supposed to have one and was able to capture that shot at first attempt after guessing where to point it.

Hypersync works because the flash duration is so slow compared to the shutter.

It's a great shot none-the-less.

Thoughts.

1) Capturing another photographers flash in your shot where you want it is ALWAYS cool! (esp if unplanned).

2) I would strongly recommend watching this video as it goes into detail whilst being simple and easy to understand; its a very well put together video.


It also shows that for a shot like this you could have potentially used your own flash at a higher power setting without highspeed sync and still gotten the shot (leastways assuming that the only part you'd need the "fill" light from the flash on is the back of the person jumping; though the trees, whilst further back, might have been an issue).
