about my Nikon D40 and i'm unsatisfied with the results. the colors are dull and the multi shot is slow.
i'm planning on making photography my living and i'm wondering whether i should get a D300 or D700 for work with a newspaper or just go all out and save for a D3 for life. help please. i'm also planning on buying lenses that would fit my current camera and my future one.

I would like to see some samples of your work before agreeing that the D40 won't cut it and that the D300 or 700 or D3 are the answers to your problems. Another newbie here with a D40 who for all I know could have been shooting in the full 'green dummy' auto mode posted some of her photos and they're simply stunning. I never cease to be amazed by what my little D40 can do as well, and I do have nicer cameras.

I am getting the feeling you are a beginner who knows nothing about cameras or photography, but you want a faster FPS so you can get lucky at baseball games for newspaper shots, and lack of color is the only other thing that you can think of for a supporting reason to waste your money on a better camera. Mav is right, the D40 is great. The fact that your post says you know everything about it is completely absurd.

i want faster fps because i skateboard. i always thought using sequences to get lucky is cheap. and i honestly feel like i have to edit the saturation on most of my pictures becuase the color isn't satisfying.

I realize my last reply was possibly a bit harsh - sorry about that. Personally I get hacked when beginners immediately want to jump to pro bodies, thinking that'll be the miracle drug for them. Go ahead and post some of your work - some goods & bads. The D40 is a VERY capable camera! Enjoy it!

that one skateboarding picture i'm just realizing is really blurry---my fault.
and i took most of these completely manual. i think one or two skating ones on dummy mode

Nice. I really like the shot of the kid on the razor. For the color/contrast, I'll let a D40 owner better answer your questions...achkem, mav... Looks like the sunsets are just underexposed, white balance looks off in the razor shot...and the reflections in the door handle may explain the situation a bit more

I think Keith really knows what he's talking about. I just wanted to say two things:

1) If I were serious about "working" in photography especially sports stuff like boarding the D300 (and D700 I hear) can't compete with the D3. Doing action or sports? The D3 is your camera!

2) Unless you're as insane as I am I wouldn't even think about the D3 till I was already making some money with the D40 and things were looking positive. So kinda like, buy the tool after you get there - or at least are well on your way.

Keith, the razor picture is on sepia. I don't think anything is wrong with the white balance. And I was having exposure problems that I couldn't figure out with my camera on that sunset picture too.
And Bifurcator, that answers my question. Not that I'll be saving for anything like that any time soon. New lenses make more more of a difference in pictures than the body so I'm gonna go with getting a fisheye, micro lens, and better zoom lens.
