I think I'm getting better.

So, I've been using my aperture setting (I usually use AI) quite a bit with inanimate objects just for practice, like my dresser handle, my rings, and other things. I've been using the same surface, because it's a pretty surface and it's pretty light, so I believe that helps with the coloring a bit. I'm also using flash with it, so I think that helps a lot. I'm still getting some grainyness to my pictures, though, and that throws it off for me, but I like how these ones came out, despite the grainyness.
