Yeah.. I had to take pictures for a school assignment, needed fill, but I'm poor. So I don't have any flashes or umbrellas. BUT i did have a cookie sheet. It reflected light and softened shadows marvelously. I think i deserve a cookie!

or how about those car window shades? They are usually white or silver to deflect heat. They work great.
 
I carry 2 sheets of white foamcore board in one of those cheap, big, portfolio envelopes. You can always wrap them in aluminum foil too.

That's what I use. You can get the round collapsible shades for $5 at wal-mart. It's almost identical to the ones you get for photography and those are $45-$80! I've heard there are some that have gold on one side which would be great for warming reflected light.
