In car night photography gear?

Has anyone had experience with these things (suction cups in general I mean). Do they allow sharp images to be taken ,ie, lighttrails as below. will they damage my hood if I stick them on there. Are they reliable, my GPS holder just pops of the windshield at random, on the inside of coarse.

I have a vague suspicion that the above is a composite shot.

I can tell you that Top Gear used those 3 suction windshield mounts on the inside of the car and single external suction cup gopro mounts for 23 seasons. Suction cups can be designed well, but most of the ones that come with GPS devices are junk. As long as everything is very very clean, they shouldn't do any damage. Obviously if there is any dirt on there it can potentially scratch.

I've just been thinking about trying to do a shot like that in my Miata. Fairly expensive piece of kit for one photo though
