Inexpensive alternative to the Nikon ME-1 microphone?

Hi! I'm considering an off-camera microphone like the Nikon ME-1, which is currently $120 on Amazon.

Does anyone have any recommendations for mics that are less expensive but around the same quality as the Nikon ME-1? I know $120 isn't particularly expensive for a microphone (and that the ME-1 isn't a particularly amazing microphone), but if there's something out there for less $ and around the same quality I'd like to know about it. For example, this TAKSTAR looks pretty good for about $35. I rarely shoot video.

I'm not interested in a solution that's more expensive/better quality than the ME-1. Just looking for something around the same quality for less money.

A few years ago I bought the Nikon-branded GPS unit for a couple hundred bucks. I rarely used it, and when I did, the performance was just okay. I later sold it. So after that experience, I'd like to explore 3rd-party brands for accessories that I think I'll use infrequently.

Thanks for your comments!

The me1 is the inexpensive alternative. I use the cheap røde shotgun mic

the rode is good but its a mono mic. The nikon is stereo.

I bought the XIT on amazon... chump change... works like a charm.

I use a Zoom H1 and just sync the audio in post. I really love it..sounds so MUCH better than on camera mic. You can get the Sescom Attenuation cable if you don't want to sync it, sounds pretty good that way too..but not as good syncing it in post.
