I found a very interesting master's thesis on the historical veracity of the John Ford trilogy (Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande.)
THe thesis was written for a Masters in Military History and the pdf is downloadable from from
http://www.dtic.mil/get-tr-doc/pdf?AD=ADA211796
(It is too large for upload here.)
That is the Defense Technical Information Center and the pdf is a scan of the thesis entitled "JOHN FORD'S CAVALRY TRILOGY: MYTH OR REALITY?" weitten by an AF Major JEFFREY C. PRATER, MAJ, USAF, for partial fulfillment at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Detailed and interesting both about John Ford and the movies. (Later printed as paperback and available on Amazon.)
