What's new

is it art?

I'm not sure. I guess you could argue it as "fine art," but, for me it depends on the thought process of the creator, which is often super-vague and almost impossible to truly know. You just have to take the artist at their word.

This is something that I've seen a lot in the local photo club.

There's a lot of "Well, the photo just didn't pop so I started adding filters and then put it through Nik HDR."

It kind of makes me sad because the first question to be asked at every meeting is "Is this HDR?" And not something like "How'd you get that angle?" Or something a little more substantial.

So in other words, if you had an image like this envisioned from the beginning then I would say it's art, but if you tried to make a blah photo into art after the fact then I would say it isn't...gallery-ready art.

But, once again, that's a very difficult thing to discern.
Maybe the art observers and the art makers are in the same predicament. Everything has been done. So now anything, no matter how horrible, incorrect, or deviant and poor that is any way at all different is valued. The more different it is, the more they think it has value. The composition or integrity of the artistry is secondary.

Let us know when it "sells"....mmmkay????
i sense the sarcasm. But this is where no one really knows. That is what is strange. i mean, you can cc and knock stuff on here all you want. But in the end, when it comes to it, it comes down to if someone is willing to put down money on it to buy it doesn't it? Like those paintings i mentioned above. A art critic could have cc'd them to death. But it really doesn't matter. They were sold and are hung up now with lights going over them.

I can sense when somebody is just yanking my chain. Your photo is not art. It's rubbish ,which you spent like 40 seconds "making". Give it a rest.

i agree with you. it is rubbish. im more on thinking of what would make it art, or considered art. 5 a.m. time to go to work.

why are you so concerned what will make it art? To make up for the lack of skill behind the photography, or other reasons? I still don't understand why you aren't concerned with learning how to take better pictures, you know, as a photographer.

honestly, if you have to ask if something is art, then we both know it's not.

but then again, what do it know: http://fineartamerica.com/featured/silford-with-a-twist-brad-walters.html

That website seems to be full of people who couldn't takea good photo to save their lives, then just beat it even futher with PS filters, and get tons of praise for their efforts in the comments. They also apparently sell the monstrosities.

What makes it art is someone society perceives to be an authority on the subject calling it art.
Artistic, that's different. I don't think something can be made artistic. I'll shut up now. Too many comments on that subject already.
Used to roll out at 5 to pick up the tools at 6:45, brutal.

I look at this way.........Every single photo ever shot is art.......if you say it is.

Hey, all "art" is "art" in some way, but there is a scale to it.

I think some art has to be "sold", as in; the "artist" has to attempt to convince people that his product is worthy of admiration, and indeed some people will take that testimony as "proof" that the art is worthy.

Me, I'm just a little more skeptical.
how about price?

is price a consideration? what if this was placed in a long line of photos. Obviously this one, would stand out. If for no other reason it is surely bright. And it had a higher price tag on it. would people be more drawn to it? Then if it sold, would that make it art?

When I say "sell it", I'm not talking necessarily about money, although that sometimes follows. What I mean is that the "artist" needs to project a certain air about himself, and about his "art" so that the uneducated among us will believe him. It's mostly about attitude and presentation.

So let's say that you have decided to become an "artist", so you wear the proper clothing, hang with the proper crowd, talk the proper BS, and perhaps most of all, learn to put down, nay even SMASH any no-nothing critic who dares to call you out on a piece of crap. You have got to utterly put the nay-sayers in their place, which is the trash-heap of art-criticdom and do it in a way that the only possible way they can ever be believed again is to praise your crap to heaven, and recant every bad thing they ever said about your crap.

So you had better put a very high price on your crap if you ever want to be taken seriously.

And wipe that smile off your face. Learn to sneer instead.

I spent the afternoon today with a woman who argued that her point of view errors in her book were a matter of artistic choice because it was a poem and she can do whatever she likes in poems.

Ok, well it would really make my day if you could tell me you had her killed. Lol

Well, I think she almost had a seizure when I told her the piece was exploitative, condescending and pretentious. But unfortunately she did not actually die. :)

you would have to define "better". I'm finding my way to take the photos I want. That I am happy with. in my own way. And im curious to know why you don't think im learning to take better photos. I cant think of a thing i've avoided shooting short of portraiture. As you probably noticed, I was working on bw this past week. I pick something, learn for a while, go on to the next, learn for a while, go on to the next....started with movement and action.. im on using flash outdoors now or to balance bright lights and reflections right now. Any advice on that? Basically im working on the flash outdoors, balancing with it, using it to bring out colors more in flat light. And how to shoot highly reflective objects which im have some problems with. Next week, ill be on something else. Get to the end, Ill probably start over at the beginning.

Well silver lining to that cloud, at least she apparently knew what exploitative, condescending and pretentious meant. Which apparently puts her leaps and bounds ahead of most of Limr's students right there.. lol
