If you're working with RAW photos consider just turning down the default capture sharpening applied when you process your RAW files. You'd be amazed how much softer your photos are if you disable all sharpening in the RAW processing stage. Just toning back a little might give you the amount you're after (note that some capture sharpening is nearly always needed as whilst sharpening is destructive to data it gives you a clear photo to work with; otherwise it would be far too soft to work with).

If you're using JPEGs, again try adjusting the sharpness, this time toning down the default value applied in camera.

Canon V Nikon, Ford V Chevy, Chevy V Chrysler etc... it's all the same. In the end it becomes a matter of personnel preference. At the end of the day, all that matters is that you are happy with the results.

Yep if you're in JPEG just look up the camera manual and check the JPEG editing settings and how to change them - you can lower the default sharpness as well as tweak a few other settings.

If you're working in RAW when you're on the RAW processing page check around, you should have a tab somewhere (depending on the software) which will affect sharpness. Simply reduce the amount a little as needed.

Maybe it's the blown-out whites and the more-saturated reds that Canon tends to produce that you like? I mean, at least more than you like Nikon's more-detailed whites, lower red saturation, and enhaced green saturation? I dunno.Canon does have a "look" that a lot of internet-era people really do like. Are you shooting JPEGs, or working with some very basic, default image adjustment profiles? Either way, D600 or 5D-III at twice the price of a D600, you should be able to get some decent portraits on a consistent basis once you get "dialed in" well.

I've done a whole bunch of research and came to a decision - I've decided to stay with Nikon right now. I based my decision on the following:

1. I already know the Nikon system and it's taken me at least 4 years to get to this point.
2. Even though the 600EX-RT's are nice, I still believe that Nikons CLS system is light years ahead of Canon's version.
3. The 6D costs MORE and gives you LESS than the D600 does. The dual card slots alone, that the D600 offers are worth their weight in gold for me.
4. Although I only use them a few times a year, I can't deny the fact that going from two flashes and a full pocket wizard setup, to no flashes and no pocket wizards, is nearly like going from having legs to having no legs.


I still think that Canon has a better system for portraits, and I'll still envy that 'buttery smooth' look that Canon produces, but the fact remains that I've made stunning images in the past and will continue to do so with Nikon.

I will be continuing to attempt to move to an FX body though.

I'm saving up to move to a D600/D610 too. I've thought about the D700 but the video comes in handy from time to time so I want to keep that.
I've got some nice glass - 24/50/85mm primes, a 24-85 f/2.8-4, which are great lens and not a wallet killer either. So hopefully my christmas present to myself is a FF. Then I'll compare astronomy pics of the D6x0 to the D7000 and decide to keep the D7000 or not.

I am. If I can move it, I'll buy a D600 and a 50mm 1.4 and build from there.
