L glass....

Though the 85 is absolutely great, I am not sure it would be most reasonable to add to a 50 1.4. I would look at other lenses with different focal lengths.

I was thinking that, but for the OP's main needs (portrait and bokeh), you can't beat the 85mm f1.8. Another lens could be the 100mm f2.8, either L or non-L lens, since I've read some people use it as a portrait lens as well. It can give the OP a chance to start taking macro pictures as well. I like mine.

Canon makes a nice, small, very "old-school-sized" 135mm f/2.8 Soft Focus lens, which is also a "sharp-focus lens" when the soft focus settings 1 or 2 are OFF. It's not an L-series, but it's well-made, small, and light. The 135 f/2 L is a wonderful lens...a very nice optic. For versatility, the 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM is a good choice.

Not to make a sales pitch but I have a 135 soft focus that I never use and have been thinking of selling.

I hope I didn't break any rules by throwing that out.

Here's a shot with my 85mm at f1.8 (yes, in broad daylight)

Bokehlicious!

What set to?

85L. 50L. 24-70L.
My suggestions.
