Large displays for photos?

I've been looking around at different options for digital picture frames, and I think Bigeframe looks to be the biggest. They have a 42" digital picture frame that you can display your pictures on, and a wifi connection to online albums. My mom can post stuff to the album from the other side of the country, and I can play it on my digital picture frame. It's pretty neat. Also, it looks like they're based out of TN, so it's good to be able to have something made in America.

It looks like they have some resellers, but that's their direct site.

$1100 for 42" frame? Why not just buy a brand new HDTV for half the price.

Being pedantic, at best those frames could be assembled in Tennessee. There's no way that the components are manufactured in the USA, there is no LCD display manufacturing capability in the US. Nor a whole bunch of other components that go into these things.

As for the price? I think that reflects the "made in the USA" premium, plus a few features that a TV won't have.

The ability to not sidetrack your photo viewing pleasure with TV?

Seriously though I too fail to see the point. For that price a Samsung smartTV can be had which has USB ports for memory sticks and harddisks on the back and as many fancy slideshow presentations methods as you can poke a stick at.

Oh and they are cheaper, look better, and you can watch TV on a TV too.

Admittedly a guess, but I'd think a little operating system to control receipt of photos over WiFi and displaying them. I'm going off my little photo frame we use in our respective families at home. They have the ability to get photos over Internet and it is not really that simple to set up for a TV.

And you'd be wrong. My TV has that function as well. Not only for wifi but it incorporates a DLNA client that automatically finds computers and media servers and displays them when I hit the Source selection key and even asks if I want to look at videos, music or photos. As for the setup when we first turned on the TV it asked if we have a WiFi network. It automatically found it and gave the option of entering the passphrase or using WPS, I hit WPS. I walked to the router pushed the button and I was done. About 5 key presses on the TV and 1 on the router. Literally! I think you need to try yourself a smart TV you may be amazed at just what it can do and how easy it is. I even have a wireless USB keyboard plugged into mine because it was a pain typing out youtube videos using the TV remote.

Software has NOTHING to do with the expense here. My guess it's low production volumes.
