Learning DOF and aperture settings

Hello
Newbie photographer trying to follow Peterson's Understanding Exposure and my first DSLR a Canon T4i
I have taken two photos using a tripod and only adjusting the aperture from F/22 to F4.5
I don't see much change in what is in focus and what is blurred
According to Peterson the background should fall out of focus shouldn't it?
What am I doing wrong?

And it probably would have if you had space the bottle farther apart and/or focused on one of the nearer bottles. Notice the photo on the left has the nearest bottle out of focus, the 2nd bottle a bit soft, but the 3rd, 4th, and 5th bottles are fairly sharp, but the 6th is back out of focus. While the photo on the right has ALL the bottles in focus.

ALSO... look at the leaves and shrubs in the background. In the right photo they're still sharp but in the left they're soft.
