Lens hood, for what?

So long as you can get one that fits - none at all. You just need to watch for the corners darkening, as you'll be guessing a bit as to exactly how long a hood you can use.

I looked at a lens hood for my 50mm and from Canon, theres only one available. Why only one and not more with different shapes? What other brands are compatible with the Canon lense?

Presumably Canon decided that the design was fit for purpose on that lens. Any brand of hood that fits the screw thread on the filter mount at the front of the lens will be compatible, but you don't want one that is too long, for reasons outlined above.

is there any reason one couldn't attach a longer hood than standard for better flare protection

I've done it on occasion with a piece of black art paper wrapped around and taped to the hood. Takes a little experimenting beforehand, but can help in some situations. Especially indoors.

So i read about lense hoods on wiki but i still dont get its purpose. So it doesnt let light come in from the sides? For what? Why would i want that? Just to have a vignetting effect?

Somebody please school me. Thanks!

Since you don't seem to like the answers here why don't you try:

http://www.google.com

First thing that popped up under a search for the purpose of a lens hood:

http://www.vanwalree.com/optics/lenshood.html

Another good place to do a search:

Or if you are just too cheap to buy a hood then try here:

You post is somewhat provoking, do you realize that? If you are mad because i sonned onje of your buddies, i have one advice for you as well:

hug it out.

Idly curious, but has your question been adequately answered yet?

Yes it has, i keep coming back to see what other folks opinion are on lense hoods so i can possibly learn something else as well.

Unfortunately some of us dont have any life because they are too busy talking smack to someone who lives far away from them. Pathetic.

Here we call it spoon feeding the lazy.

Hey Sincere, I have never seen anyone get so offended over such a simple matter. Pal, it's a lenshood- very easy to find out what they are for and how they work. Your simpleton questions are tiresome and your frigging rants against others is utter bull****.

If you find that provocative- good. That was my intent.

What I find amazing is that you have been a member here since Jan 2006 and you do not have a clue as to what a lenshood is for.

Here's a tip. Buy a book on the basics. You might actually learn something and that way you will not look like an ass.

Here we call it spoon feeding the lazy.

I was really hoping this thread would die before I added another .02 cents worth, but gryphonslair unintentionally added another log to my fire.

This "Mr." Sincere has the least amount of sincerity of those that ask advice. To get all up in arms about what Mike Jordan suggested is completely out of order. The name calling is utterly juvenile and does not lend itself to a constructive discussion.

It was a simple test for your benefit "sincere", to gain your own experience, so you can attain an answer for yourself. When the times comes in a future situation with regard to lens flare, you will have the knowledge to fall back on to tell yourself..."oh yeah, the sun is just in front left of my lens, but the composition I want requires this position, what, oh what, do I do?" You can say to yourself..."I'll put a lens hood on to reduce the flare since I didn't have $h!+ for brains and already have it on to protect my $1000 dollar investment." Or you can say to yourself..."Since I don't have a hood for this particular lens, I can shield it from the sun by placing my hand or a piece of black paper so flare can be eliminated."

Regardless of how he decides to take the useful information that has been passed on to him, I will not be revisiting this thread.

Ahhh.......humility (teachability) so elusive in some.

Had this been in "basics", it might have had a different outcome.

Kind of like a grade a school question, asked in high school.
