Light Meter - Technical Inquiry

Hi all

I have a technical question that I
couldn't solve by myself so I thought of sharing it in here. I am posting it in
Fashion as most of you use studios and probable light meters.

In a
previous post about the full body studio lens, most of us agreed that using a
longer lens is better for distortion and it was noted that more light in needed
when using longer lenses because the camera will physically be far more the
subject and light needs to travel further. Here is my inquiry:

I have the
Sekonic L308s. I place it next to the models chin and meter. I use the readings
regardless of the distance between me and the subject. So if I am using a longer
lens will the image be underexposed on those readins?

wait.. .what? Who told you you need more light because it needs to travel further? Maybe if the room is filled with people smoking? WTH? It is probably right but it is so minute you can ignore it.

Unless there is a black hole between you and your subject, you should be okay.

Black Holes are best left with a lot of distance 'twixt you and it.

distance of the light to your subject matters, don't worry so much about the 50-200 thing.

play with the meter, lenses and lights and you won't have to ask =)

Nope.. unless there are tons of smoke or fog between you and the subject LOL..


You still havent told me who told you about the less light with longer lens.

Nothing to worry about. By the time you get far enough away to have to worry about Inverse Square laws, you've more than exceeded the resolution capability of commercially-available imaging products.

It is the light that hits your subject that counts.. If you meter for that.. and expose for that, you will be good!

Hi all again..

I was really confused because of this quote in a previouse post: "You would need a very long studio and very powerful studio strobes to use a 200mm lens for full length portraits."

Now it is clear and makes sence. I was smiling when I thought about the moon reflecting the light of the sun to earth, we can still see it

The quote refers to studio strobes, so it probably isn't true...

I don't know if I would meter right next to the chin but meter 2 ft back or so and you should be good.
