Looking for a 2nd lens

Well I currently own a Nikon D7000 and a 35mm 1.8G and I'm looking for a second lens for mainly photojournalist/everyday use. I'm joining the student paper at my college next year and I'd like some suggestions on the type of lens I should be looking into. Zoom and primes are fine, and my budget is around $700. Thanks in advance!
