I dabbled recently in converting the older Lumix PS cameras to IR photography. I did so with 12MP and up cameras such as the DMC-ZS15 which I own. The rest were converted for a few friends. Easy to do, really by disassembly, removal of IR no pass filter in front of the sensor, assembly back and gluing an IR 720 filter in front of the lens. Of course, this is not for professional use, rather fun. Getting very cool IR images and even videos now!

Were you able to reset autofocus for IR or are you manually adjusting it?

I shot at wide angle settings and therefore I did not reset the focus to IR. At WA the IR focus shift is negligible. Is there a way to internally reset the focus to IR? I wish I could manually adjust it but this is not a Pro camera. 😉

I’m sure it can be done; one of the companies that provide conversion do this. I have no idea how. As long as it’s working for you, no problem.

I plan on having my old D40 converted at some point.

If the camera is a typical live view camera theres no need to offset focus for IR if focusing thru the filter. Does not matter whether AF or MF.

OTOH your D40 being an SLR will need a focus offset if the IR filter is inside the camera as is typical of IR converted SLRs. Or you can bypass the SLR focus if an SLR has a live view mode. I would not convert any SLR that lacks a live view mode. IIRC that means a D300-S or newer (5D mkII for EOS). An entry level Z would be a far better choice than any SLR.
