Macro lens??

Just a quick question regarding my recent attempted macro pic below:

As this was not taken with a macro lens......what would I gain from buying a macro lens? Would it be the difference in having the whole picture in focus, not just the Nikon lettering?

This was taken on my Nikon D3000 with the 18mm - 55mm lens at 55mm.

The difference is that you would be able to fill the screen with the NIkon logo on the cap instead of the entire cap. DOF gets smaller the closer in (more magnification) you get.
