Manual Extension Tubes - Loss of contrast ?

I've used a 12mm tube with a 350D and 18-55mm lens for these and i didn't notice any contrast loss. It's only 12mm though.

I bought this set on ebay:

Is there a way to obtain the size in milimeters of each tube? Do I need to use a ruler?
