Merging bracketed shots

I have been playing with the bracket and HDR functions on my d5100. The HDR seems to work well but I think I could do better with the bracket shots or by manually taking shots and different exsposures but I can't seem to find an option to combine shots in the software that came with the camera. The software is ViewNX 2 ver2.1.1. I have searched the documentation and google with no luck. Does anyone that uses a Nikon have this software and know if it is possible or do I need to invest in Photoshop?

Photoshops HDR function in CS5 ($699) has been improved a great deal, but it still doesn't approach what Photomatix Pro can do.

$699 is way more than I am interested in spending.

Photomatix Pro 4 for $99.00 is a lot closer to my price range so long as it gets the job done.
