One of the largest members of the squirrel family, marmots are endlessly fun and wonderful characters. For the most part, I’ve spent extensive time documenting yellow-bellied marmots and not their Rocky Mountain cousin, hoary marmots. Yet of the 15 species of marmot that can be found in North America, hoary marmots are likely the most iconic member of the species. The whistling noise they make to communicate and warn each other of impending danger is behind the name for the world famous ski resort and co-Olympic host city, Whistler, BC. This hoary marmot was found near the summit of Logan Pass in Glacier National Park and though they were unusually skittish, I was thrilled to be able to document this tender moment between mother and young.
