A Spicebush Swallowtail and a Tiger Swallowtail "mudding" on a local lake yesterday.
A typo i gather,Nice photo. What does mudding mean?
They don't just visit puddles... they do this, too... wonder what that is called?A typo i gather,
Why do butterflies go puddling?
Though rich in sugar, nectar lacks some important nutrients the butterflies need for reproduction. For those, butterflies visit puddles. By sipping moisture from mud puddles, butterflies take in salts and minerals from the soil. This behavior is called puddling, and is mostly seen in male butterflies.2 Mar 2019
It's not a typo. The entire term is described correctly as Mud-Puddling. I've read it decribed both ways, i.e. mudding and/ or puddling. I like mudding.A typo i gather,
