I'm experimenting with a little java front end for IRC right now out of curiosity...

I second the idea of IRC. It's really not that hard to use. And since it's an open protocol there are many many programs out there that you can use to connect to it, rather than just being limited to a chat program embedded into a page on TPF. Plus it's free.

Just tends to be complicated for people that are new to it, that is really the only downfall.

Only quickly flicked through this thread, not got much time.

Why not set up an IRC room on any IRC network and run a free script on here? People can connect via the script or mIRC. And it won't cost you a penny.
