One of my practice photos, The town workers could have done better work spreading the lights, this side has the most of them but still some parts missing and the other sides have less.
The Exif is 6 sec / F22 / Iso 100 / 32mm

I like the use of a small aperture to get the starburst effect from the lights, but the long shutter speed required for such a small aperture reveals too much of the background. Perhaps find a happy medium between the two so you lose more background.

You can also try a "bokeh effect filter" or whatever it's called. Very easy to make, just cut a circle out of sturdy paper (a size that will fit in front of your lens' front element), then cut out a design in the middle for the star. If you are a skilled artist, you'll be able to make it more realistic rather than cheesy.

Beautiful; i would trim some from right; that would also make the tree out of center :D
