Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
Haven't been on here for awhile but I don't know how to focus on an area to reduce the brightness or lighten it up without ruining the whole picture. And if you don't mind show me how to do it. I have LR3 and Photoshop CS5. Thanks mucho!

I don't know LR, but in PS there are several ways to do it, as there are several ways to do most things. In my opinion, the best is to use a brightness adjustment layer with a layer mask. You can look this up, but here are the basic steps:

1. Create adjustment layer for brightness - there should be an icon on the layers palette to create an adjustment layer, then you select brightness from the list.
2. Use the slider to increase/decrease brightness by about the amount you want for a particular area (you'll need two separate layers to both brighten and darken). Don't fuss at this point - all completely adjustable later.
3. Go to Edit>Fill, then select black to fill the layer with black - this blocks the effect of the adjustment.
4. Select the brush tool, adjust brush size to a little smaller than the area you want to adjust, make the foreground color white, and paint white on the adjustment layer where you want the effect - you should see the image brighten/darken as you do this.

You can adjust or redo the painting on the layer mask or adjust the amount of brightness reduction/increase any time or just delete the entire adjustment layer and start over if you want.

Lightroom can't do this.

I duped the layer in Photoshop. Set the blending mode to Screen and adjusted the opacity to lighten the right side. Added a layer mask to the dupe layer and applied a linear gradient (black to white) to balance.

Repeated the process using Multiply blending mode to darken the left side.

The highlights on the blue shirt guy are blown. Blown highlights can't be fixed. I did a quick and sloppy clone job to begin the process.

Fine-tuned overall tone response in Levels -- image was flat. Dupe the layer again and used Soft Light to raise contrast.

Used the History brush directly (low opacity) to paint in art work on wall using Multiply blending mode.

Quick color adjust based on skin tone.

Thanks so much for those quick response. I will give it a try now,

Not the best but I did this in lightroom. I just adjusted the temperature, exposure and used the adjustment brush to lighten the exposure on one side of the picture and darken it on the other. Im not that great at editing but I thought i would give it a try :)

Edit: I deleted it because it was horrible... Should have looked at it when it was large before I posted it.

Here is my take. It's tough to know how to adjust when you don't know the original colours, but I think the edit is crisper with more detail in the shadows:

Steps:
LR3
- correct colour cast
- recovery (for the lamp shade)
- fill light for the dark side
- edit in PS
- screened similar to what clanthar did
- hue and saturation - reduce reds
- adjust shadows and highlights
- add sharpness - duplicate layer, blend mode is linear light, filter>other>high pass
- set high pass to .8
- changed opacity of layer to 70%
- NR (topaz plugin) to get rid of the noise in the grandfather's coat

The sharpening has "wrinkled" the left most person's shirt, but you could smooth that out pretty easily. It looks a little washed out in the forum, but you could adjust vibrance and saturation to your preference.

Eh... shirt turned out ok....everything else--not so much. :lmao:

Here you go.. what you want to use on LR3 is Graduated Filter. BTW.. this photo seems to be distorted quite a bit. They guy on the left has really big hand.
