So I just bought the 24-70L and right away tried it out. It abviously comes fully retracted so to my surprise fully retracted is actually at its longest zoom. Does this make sence? Ive asked two other people and they have no clue what I am talking about.

Yes, makes complete sense, just like a 18-55 kit. At 18 and 55 its fully extended while at 35 it fully retracted

It's how the lens is built. The kit 18-55mm does something similar. It's fully extended for both 18 and 55mm. I don't know the physics behind why, but I do know that several lenses work this way.

Nope it's defective. I'd be happy to dispose of it for you, just send to me.

ok thx

I haven't played that much yet( I'm not sure why) but I have no doubts about it:-)

it sounds like you do have doubts. Not to sound like an @ss, but if you weren't having issues why would you wonder if it was normal. If it somehow zoomed backwards or something it would probably be pretty apparent in your photos.

Yeah, that's an oddity of the 24-70. Took some getting used to.

How has no one commented this yet:

The hood attaches to a fixed location on the lens. At 70mm it is retracted effectively giving the longest hood, while being fully extended at 24mm to allow the same lens hood to be used without getting in the FoV of the lens.
