I would like to get into photography, but need a new digital camera to do so. I have a feeling my current Kodak Easyshare 2 MP camera just won't cut it.

I am looking for a relatively inexpensive camera good for taking outdoor shots. Specifically, sky shots, lightning, and scenery.

I've considered getting an SLR, but how are SLRs different from regular digital cameras?

I also want a camera that will let me change as many settings as possible. My budget max is $300.

What would be a good digital camera for me to invest in?

At $300 max, a DSLR will be a hard find. Unless you find a GREAT deal on epay. But 300 will get you a nice point and shoot these days. I don't use them, so I can't recommend. My daughter likes her Nikon P&S, my other daughter likes her Fuji P&S. But other than older Cool Pix models, I have no recommendations.

Would it be more worthwhile to fork up at additional $200-$300 for a DSLR?

No contest, with DSLR's available new in the $500 range.

if 300 is your limt look in the new zd710 kodak
