I'm 16, getting into photography and wondering which one to purchase. I can get the nikon d50 with a 300mm lense. I was thinking the coolpix, but people keep telling me SLRs always win this battle. I'm looking for good quality photos, and I'm fine with both of there features. which one would be better overall?

Well.. DSLRs have their downsides too. There's the annoyance of keeping the lens / camera clean. They're kinda bulky at times. Those are the few that I think of on the top of my head.

But to be honest, I just started using a DSLR recently (~6months ago) and I love it. not sure if you realy want a 300mm lens though.

Get a d50, with either a 50mm prime or the kit lens the comes with most low end DSLR units. 300mm is overkill.

I'm getting it with the 300mm for $280. The 50mm is gonna be $50 or something.. why d50 over the p100 though? image quality seems on par, if not then the p100 is superior.

where are you getting it that it comes with the camera, and a 300mm for less than $300.. or even a 50mm for 50 bucks.. hmm.

Anyway.. if your SERIOUS about photography, id go DSLR.

Its all about the features
Plus with the coolpix you are stuck with one lens, with the d50 you can expand to other things later. Plus the 50mm is going to perform better in low light, the 300mm I would recommend if you wanted to go into photojournalism at your school.

wrong. THe sensor in the D50 is over 10 times as big, hell a Nikon D1 would print better than a P100.

Get the D50 and either a 50mm or 35 f/1.8.
