What kind of wildlife? Creepy-crawly insects, or wild lions? Something in between?

You might get a sigma 150-600 contemporary for that if lucky, or Nikon's own 200-500

I second the Nikon 200-500, although I think they're out of your budget.

The Sigma C is easy to find under $900 used. the Tamron G1 even more so.

the 200-500 would be tough to find at $900, they still hang around $1000 or so.

I was looking at the Sigma and Tamron 150-600mm lenses, but was put off by the cost and weight, particularly paired with a DX camera. I am now lusting after a Sigma 100-400 mm which can be had for around $650. Even though it is an FX lens, it is much lighter than the 150-600's. I rarely have a need to go as high as 400mm, much less 600mm. Remember at 400mm, this is a field of view equivalent of a 600mm on a full frame. The one downside to the 100-400mm is the lack of a lens tripod mount, but it is almost 2 pounds lighter than the 150-600mm, so it will work with the camera mounted to the tripod. It is definitely worth a look, particularly with matched with a DX.

I've got a D5600 with the Sigma 150-600 contemporary lens and really like it.
