Nikon D700 Or Sony NEX-5R

I'm buying one of those and my cousin just bought the Sony one. He said why have all them settings and advance stuff when you can just point and shoot and have the photos come out as good or better than the Nikon D7000. Is this true? Which one will you choose for someone that wants to buy a dslr and take great pictures with less of a hassle learning advance stuff...

All those settings and advanced stuff allow for a broader range of creativity. Your creativity.
Like having control over the depth-of-field.

If you want the camera's Auto version of creativity, camera brand/model hardly matters.

Why pay so much for any camera that doesn't have "all them settings and advance stuff".

If you think either that he is correct or you don't want to be an actual photographer but you just want to take sharp pictures, then by all means, stick with the Sony.

On the other hand, if you think either he actually might be totally FOS and doesn't know anything about photography or that you might want to learn to be a great photographer, then wait a bit, think about it and explore the capabilities of your 3100 before you decide if you want to invest time, money and effort into using a sophisticated camera to make great pictures.

I actually think we can take this even another step, why spend so much money on the Sony when you can take very good pictures and videos on your cell phoe ?
Seriously my Samson Galaxy 3 with its 8mp sensor takes nice pictures and I dont need to play with any settings and its always available.

You want to take just Joe Shmo avarage pictures without bothering to try and be creative with your camera I say stick to a cell phone or buy a cheap P&S and go on your mary way, if you want to get the creative juices flowing, learn how to make really interesting pictures then pick a DSLR like the Nikon D7000, learn how to use it, learn about photography, buy the equipment you need and most importantly HAVE FUN or else a cell phone camera is all that you need and there is nothing wrong with that-its your call.

No it's not true. There are inherent limitations to what a P&S can do, You might have a lens on a P&S that could outreach one that someone has on their DSLR but better IQ? no. Mind you you're talking about the NEX5, that's hardly a point and shoot. If you want a compact alternative to a DSLR then that's a good one.

That's up to you, if you really want a DSLR then get one, if you want to expand your knowledge (aka: the hassle) then it'll be up to it. If you want less hassle then keep it on auto.

Hassle? Advanced?

They are not really that advanced as far as usability goes.


The hassle will be more about things you won't be able to do with the sony, very easily, when the time comes.



At the same time I wouldn't mind the Sony + metabones + 50mm f1.2

Being able to consistently make great images is almost entirely about learning the advanced stuff. Though the definition of a 'great image' is a moving target.

If you don't want to devote the time and effort learning the advanced stuff, you can pretty much count on consistently making mediocre images with an occasional great image that results from serendipity.

So you rather listen to someone with Zero experience with lack of knowledge on the subject. And trying to justify his decision of being the Best camera. Maybe for one that is just going to click away and not dedicate the effort to improve.

Have your cousin ask that same question when he's around photographers doing it for a living? Or if what he says is so true than why are the majority of us here are Not using it? Photographer would be the first to jump the wagon for lighter,smaller kit. If it got the job done that is and gave him the performance and control needed.

That Samsung Galaxy Note is a pretty nice camera phone...seriously...my niece has one...it shoots very good images.

The SONY NEX-5 and NEX-7 are pretty popular...16 MP and 24 MP sensors...shoot decent video...Michael Reichmann of The Luminous Landscape has used the NEX-7 in Mexico for months on end...it's kind of a cult camerfa. It is NOT a "point and shoot"...that's not what it it.

The Nikon D7000 also has a 16 megapixel sensor, but is more of a conventional d-slr camera. Honestly, I would prefer the Nikon to the SONY...buuuuuut, the SONY is a pretty good offering for its type and price range.

I dunno...whadda ya like better? Steak or prawns? Halibut or salmon?

I own and NEX 5R and a D90

If as you say you want advanced imagery without learning, by all means go with the 5R. It is a very capable and smart camera. Shooting in Manual side by side, there really isn't a whole lot of benefit to the D7000. Short of the D7000 being a nikon with endless lens options, I would say the NEX is on par with some features the D7000 have anything to say about. I got a hotshoe mount and can trigger strobes, OCF, the screen makes overhead shooting great for times you need it. Autofocus is ok but thats an area the D7000 is superior.

The built in Pano works very well. The intelligent auto really is quite good and will even pop out a very subtle but appropriate HDR image. Like apps? 5R has wifi and can upload to facebook, add Instagram like filters. I have used the timelapse app a few times.

Really tink about whats important to you and the right camera will emerge.

That said, I am pondering getting rid of mine. I really want a D600 and selling it would make it happen a lot sooner.

If you are planning to just buy a camera and use the auto mode, pretty much point and shoot, then I think the Sony is better. If you want to have a light weight camera, then Sony is better.
