Hello again. I am really enjoying this forum. Thank you all for your input and Merry Christmas.

I am still shopping but am leaning towards the D7100. Before I pull the trigger I am wondering if anyone uses their camera for video. From time to time I set up the tripod and let my video camera go. Like today I set it up for Christmas present opening. As my boys get bigger I may use it for sports as well. My intention for any camera I buy is to also purchase a boom mic to go with it. (That was the biggest mistake I made when purchasing my last video camera, it cannot use a boom mic)

I saw the spec on the D5xxx shoots at 60 fps while the D7100 only shoots at 30 fps.

Thanks

The D7100 will shoot 720p & 1080i at 60fps. I've used mine only for shooting exhaust demonstrations and drag racing, but not very much. Seemed to do pretty well for the most part though.

Hi FarSide - the D5300 is the only Nikon that shoots 1080/60 progressive. This is a lot better for smooth action and in-camera slow motion than the D7100's 720/60p or 1080/60i.

Both are great video cameras, but the $797 D5300 is the best Nikon DSLR ever for video.

Here is what the European model can do at 1080/50p:

Between these cameras - for stills, I would definitely spend the extra $400 for the D7100. But if you're primarily a video shooter, I would get the D5300. The only real advantage the D7100 has for video is the headphone jack.

Hope this is helpful and best of the New Year!

Bill
