It would be nice, but like most consumer electronics Nikon's standard US warranty is only in effect for the original owner.

True, however I have not opened any of the warranty paperwork or registered the camera online with nikon therefore I would assume the new owner can open all of the paperwork and register it as if they were the original owner, correct me if im wrong though
