This is a really random question. Can I just put my really REALLY dirty UV filter in the dishwasher? It's an old Rokinon 67mm filter for my 35mm camera. It came with an old lens that I got at an antique shop for cheap. After all, it's just a piece of glass isn't it?;)

Also. Should I even use a UV filter for a 35mm camera? I always hear people arguing that they degrade the picture quality and you should just learn how to use your lens cap instead.

I would not put it in the dishwasher :-)

usually optical glass has one or more layers of coating, which probably wouldn't appreciate high temperatures or aggressive soap. and i honestly know next to nothing about film! so i'll let someone else answer that

sure the dishwasher will work fine, i suggest using Dawn ultra concentrated detergent it really works out the grime

If you are going to shoot a lot in hazy situations the UV filter will help. It can also protect the lens from the elements when you are shooting outside. Try some lens cleaner to see if it does the trick otherwise just buy another. You can do without one. What can be nice is if the wind kicks up sand or dirt it will damage the filter not the lens and a filter is cheaper to replace.
