I wonder what his story is. We can make assumptions, but there are a number of things in that image that don't fit an easy or simple narrative.

As for the image, your choice of presenting it in colour and not B/W works for me, in that it implies there's more to the story. I'm sure you were deliberate in that framing, catching the people going by, and the accumulation of stuff between the fence and the entrance cover. The red sleeping bag seems almost festive, and the boots look rather well cared for. The position of the shopping card implies that he is using it as a gate to prevent access to the stuff behind it. There is a blue sleeping mat rolled up underneath the cart, and he is not using it... There is definitely a story there.

I planned on color from the start.
The rich green of the subway entrance roof makes a pleasant contrast with the red of his bag and is a sort of statement in itself - solid, well kept, comfortable.
The occupy protester seems small and 'vulnerable' and not an obstacle in any way.
Cutting the passersby and the cart in half by the framing was my way of signalling that they aren't important in the picture but just sort of supplementary information.

Is he an actual occupy protester? It's hard to tell that from the image.

Regardless, I really like this one, especially the red of the sleeping bag and the slope of the entrance roof. It (metaphorically) looks like he fell off Wall Street and just gave up right there on the sidewalk.
