What's new

OCD is Baaaaaaaad...

I feel for ya. It is hard to see our kids when they mimic the things we would rather not do ourselves.

And as for the "Dude Thing" :lmao:

Would you believe I get that all the time?

In most people who don't have the constant obsessive thoughts when they go through periods of heightened stress they can manifest similar habits. Sort of a way of nurturing a sense of some control when life feels like it is spinning out of control. (organizing silverware, arranging your video/cd/or book collections alphabetically, making sudden unpredictable and frequent changes to your appearance like hair color, piercings, tattoos... the last ones serve to direct conversations with friends and family away from the "What's Wrong?" query).

I've heard o ne theory that makes a lot of sense. If you look at a lot of non-primates (and many primates as well) an animal will enter an unfamiliar place and if there is no immediate danger relax. Cats in particular, they'll go into a cave, make a cursory inventory for threats, and go to sleep. A human, OTOH, will enter an unfamiliar cave, look extensively around corners, behind rocks, recheck once or twice, check further inside, and eventually, cautiously and nervously fall asleep.

Humans and some primates seem to have a sort of feedback loop which promotes doubt in our observations - and that makes sense. If we all just went into a cave and looked around at what is immediately there without concern for what *might* be there or what we might have overlooked, forgotten or misjudged, it's more likely we'll be eaten by the lion which we mistook for a pile of rocks or was hiding further inside. We've even developed an ability for our 'eyes to play tricks on us' to more closely observe potential threats.

The theory is that with OCD this feedback loop never turns off, and the brain keep sending those signals to recheck everything no matter how mundane, or even - in the case of things we cannot control, checking and rechecking the unrelated things we can control just to satisfy the need to reassure that part of the brain that everything is ok and to just STFU already. Unfortunately, for whatever reason that part of the brain won't stfu and the need to rearrange the silverware, count ceiling tiles, avoid sidewalk cracks is the only way that we know how to satisfy that need to check and recheck something that is intangible and cannot be rechecked, beyond our control, or for that matter has already passed.

Another one for me, I have a bizarre habit that is triggered when I see numbers align like this. Even as I was typing this I was saying... I'm not going to do it... not going to do it... and I did it.

Not to offend anyone who is not spiritual here but I see it as a reminder to pray and say a very specific prayer.
I believe in a higher power that I choose to call God and will pray for you my friend. I really wish and pray of some natural remedies for cure's,instead of here take these harmful drugs by the doctors. When you read some of the side affects on some that could occur is crazy.

^^^ I appreciate your intentions here, but the medications are literally life saving. You don't 'pray for a natural cure' to someone battling cancer, you pray for recovery and the side effects of modern cancer treatment is kind of a necessary evil at this point.

Hopefully someday that will be fixed with advances in medicine (natural or otherwise), as with treatments for mental illness, but right now there is no reliable natural remedy for any organic mental illness. Cannabis comes close for some disorders, but that has it's own potential risks.

With OCD there are usually obsessive thought processes at work that you are trying to escape which is why you develop odd little habits.

That's the best way I've ever heard it explained.

Well, before Abilify, I was atheist. But I may just be an Abilifiest these days.

I always hold out hope in the theory of Mind over Matter. Steven Hawking is the best example of this having lived 50 years beyond his diagnosed life expectancy, this far. In the category of cancer I have seen people with cancer diagnosed with 3 months to live go on without the harmful treatments and get 3 more wonderful years (of course they were in their 70s or 80s and at that point you really have to consider their likeliness of surviving the treatments).

It really is up to the patient in any case. Sometimes it saves a life sometimes it doesn't. And sometimes even when it saves them it drastically diminishes the quality of their life. I honestly don't know if I could do chemo or radiation if it ever came down to it. My aunt got cancer in her mid 20s and survived through the treatments. But spent the remainder of her life in and out of hospitals with all sorts of illnesses some more common and some quite unusual, until her passing last year after an encounter with breast cancer.

Thank you Dark Shadow - That is very kind but you don't have to pray for me. I am pretty okay. So far nothing I can't handle.:

unless its ungodly hot out I have a tendency of either colsing the vents or turning them to the side s they don't blow directly on me. Funny i'm from the north but get cold easily as where pixmedic prefers polar bear cold guess its a compromise so we're both happy. Now our 4 yr old insists on open doors being closed, to the point he will close them himself found it to be an interesting habit.

I wish my kids closed the door. They go outside to play and leave the door wide open.I also wish the would learn turn off lights.I turn them off and there back on again a few minutes later and not one light but every room they go.:banghead:

Haha... Kids... Funny how they can run your feelings toward them across the entire emotional spectrum in a single day.

My girl drives me nutty with her inability to recognize "The Box" you know, the one we are all confined to? She doesn't think outside of it she ceases to recognize it's very existence. Which opens the door to endless possible ways to drive me nutty... scratching designs into the computer monitor with a push pin... using the tooth paste as a pin cushion... creating a collage out of hair from various dolls and herself, gluing it all to a piece of paper... gluing her art work to the dining room wall... toilet papering her bedroom because her bunk bed needed "Princess Hair"... sprinkling her baby bottle pop into the carpet because she wanted to make it smell pretty...

Now to borrow the above expression:

:banghead:

It has always been bad... starting as soon as she could walk and she started smearing Vaseline all over herself. Trust me you don't ever want to have to clean a Vaseline covered kid... The other stuff was all between 3 and 5.

$Picture 047.webp

I knew I had a pic. At least in this one she hadn't caked it in her hair... oh what a nightmare that is.

Found the rant I posted from the first time she did this:

"Baby Girl!
No that is not Pretty Pretty!

Okay, lets start at the beginning.

I am job searching online.
Meanwhile the baby is in the living room. Decently child proofed. She had her Kiddie cartoons on and what not.
The next thing I know.
She comes waltzing in saying,
"Pretty Pretty"

I look over to see a child with Goop in her hair and not just in her hair. Like, caked in her hair.
Carting in her hand a tub of even more goop that is covered in goop.
What is this goop?? You must be wondering.

Well, let me tell you.
VASELINE
"Pretty Pretty"

Sure it was cute.
My first response was laughter.
That is until I had to clean up this mess.
And for those of you who have never experienced the joy of having to clean Massive amounts of Vaseline out of a child's hair. Let me share with you what became of the next 2 hours of my day.

So, I threw her in the shower.
I tried the baby shampoo, followed by the kids shampoo, then my shampoo,
then the body soap, then the body scrub....
In the midst of my washing my cell phone starts ringing.
"Hmm... That sounds like it is in the bathroom." I thought.
I quick checked the obvious places, Sink, trash, toilet... Not there.
So on with trying to clean the, hair of doom...
What else to try.
Then like a stroke of genius,
I remembered how my grandma used Peanut Butter to get gum out of my hair as a child.
So, peanut butter it was... Well, not so much. 'Cause now on top of oily her hair was kinda orange.

On the verge of tears, I pluck this oily, orange haired, mischief monster from the tub and call her father.
He says, "...Try Baking Soda or Dish soap..." So in that order I did just that.

NOTHING FREAKING WORKS!!!

So, I give up. Maybe is will come out in a couple of days.

So, ya wanna know where the phone turned up?

Any Guesses??"

My phone was in the foot of her Pajamas.

Edit: And another time I found my phone in the dishwasher...
