Where I am continuing education units are typically credits in courses that don't count towards a specific degree offered by a college/institution. Instead they are courses you take often to enhance knowledge you already have or for some kind of more personal gain.

I am a child care worker and have to have so many continuing education units per year to show that I am working to supplement and add to my existing knowledge of child care. I won't get a degree with them but I will show a dedication to professionalism and staying up to date in my job field.
