Old Kentucky Barn - C&C Please

Canon 5D & 50mm 1.8; 1/250 sec @ f/11 ISO 100

that bad? LOL. I guess it got lost in the new threads.

From a noobs eye, I like the photo but would have taken a few steps up the hill until the barn got above the grass line. The grass covers almost half way up the barn in the foreground. Please take my critique for what it is, an opinion of noob with limited knowledge of photography.

I found the grass covering almost half the side of the barn a good part of the charm and chemistry that makes the picture. Having the barn out of the grass degrades that imagery, and it becomes just another run of the mill barn shot.

Thank you both! I agree I like the grass but I can also see your point. I have about 6 different images from different vantage points and distance. I believe I have an image with less grass as well.

Any other thoughts? I would like some critical critique so I can apply it to make my next image better. What was done well what wasn't?

Why do I only ever get a couple of comments when I ask for C&C?

Always seems that you only get a couple... threads just get lost to easily!

You know what I hate? And not just pointing this out in your image; but just in general. When "airplane trails" end up in my pictures. This shot has one RIGHT in the center :p Unless its what you are intending to take a photo of they always seem to detract from the image.

Anywho: I like the image. The colour of the sky is absolutely wonderful; nothing you can do about it BUT would have been better without the clouds on the left side.
Seems like it could be a bit sharper. For me, I would have tried to get a bit closer and lower in the grass. That way there is more grass but still only covering the same amount of the barn!

All in all, its a nice image. Not a great image. but a nice image :)

6.5/10

I would like a little tighter crop from the bottom, would flow into the rule of 3s and not feel like I have to travel up the grassy hill to see the barn. i think I like the grass in the barn as well but not sure. Does give a sense of discovery though.

I'm with Geronimo on this one: I feel the horizon line is too far up, too close to dividing the frame up into upper half and lower half. Nothing wrong with the perspective on the whole, though, as it lends the image some "suspense" - what's coming when we climb up further?

By the way, I immediately visualised a b&w conversion when I first saw this one - have you ever considered trying? (Together with the crop).

Geronimo, are you THE Geronimo who used to be here when TPF was still young? Looks like it from when you first joined! Where have you been in all those years?

Why do I only ever get a couple of comments when I ask for C&C?

It's just the nature of a large and busy site, as well as the internet as a whole. TPF has nearly 120,000 members, which in reality means that at some point each one actually took the time to stop lurking and sign up, but that doesn't make them active members. I'm sure that the vast majority of them rarely visit the site on a daily or even weekly basis, and never post a comment or personal CC. Every time I've checked the stats out of curiosity, the guests always out number the members.

As you go through threads and posts, look at the names, and you'll see the same 3 dozen or so names over and over again. When you do see a new name, that person usually becomes active for a period of time.

Many of the views you get are just that. They view your pictures and just move on. They never comment one way or the other, and they never post their work, if they even have any.
