Are you using a calibrated monitor?

My monitor isn't calibrated, but based on some 8x10s I had printed it seemed pretty decent. Currently, I can't afford a calibration device. I'm actually kind of curious if it's because of the matte it's printed on. It looks a lot better in a bright room.
