I looked at this for a really long time and couldn't figure out if it is a photoshop effect, a plane on a mirror, a bit of both, or neither lol! Score one for keeping me interested for so long. I really like the colours.

Yep, it's a Photoshop technique known as Out Of Border (OOB) or Out Of Bounds.

I would have left the red wing inside the border... so it gives it the feeling that it is coming out of a picture.. rather than just sitting on top of something.

yeah, that's the struggle I have with this shot. Normally the OOB looks like something is coming out of the framed picture. In this case, it just looks like it's sitting on top.
