Photographing Stow Gypsy Horse Fayre

I've been commissioned by Cotswold Life to shoot images at Stow Gypsy Horse Show this Thursday, but a regular staff photographer has warned me against going with camera gear as two years back he was robbed of several items from his rucksack whilst shooting. He was also threatened after taking pictures of various people there.
Any thoughts or advice?

Take only as much as you can realistically use. Leave the bulk of your gear at home.

Ask first if you can take someone's picture.

It is entirely possible that the other fellow was combative to begin with. Especially after his gear was stolen.
