I've heard them in the woods while hiking. They sound like a jack hammer compared to a normal wood pecker. I have never seen one though. Really nice shot. What size lens did you use?

I hadn't realised it till last night when I was working on a few others that this shot was taken at ISO 3200 on a 40D

Nice shot! I never saw one of these in the wild until last June when one appeared on a dead tree in our yard. I was most fascinated by his call rather than his pecking. It was his call that drew me to the window. I couldn't believe my eyes! He spent about 10 minutes pecking away at the tree then vanished and i haven't seen him since.

Once again - nice shot.
