I haven't seen this before. Thanks for sharing. Did you use the flash on these?

Any shots without the flash? It makes them look pretty artificial and the lighting seems strange.

At least that's how I perceived the shots, but I'm pretty new to photography. They also dont seem very vibrant but that may be the flowers themselves, idk

None w/o flash, flash tends to excite vibrancy but, they would definitely look different under natural light. I use flash so I can shoot at f/22 and get the entire bloom in focus. I usually use a shoe mounted SB910 or SB700 w/dome as Commander/main with a pr of SB-R200's mounted on the lens as fill. This combination produces a more natural look than the pr of SB-R200's alone as was used in this shot. I got a little lazy on this one.

Your second setup is much better than the first, its much more dramatic.

Yes, I got lazy on the 1st ones and paid the price with mediocre results. For the 2nd set I use a SB910 mounted on the hot shoe with diffuser dome and the r1 for fill. This setup is very flexible and not to bulky or heavy.

Your second set up works better, doesn't wash out the pinks in the flowers.
