My camera in auto really over accented the bright green colors and I wasn't very happy with the overall color, so I tried to salvage the picture by making it a black & white...

Not too bad. Looks a little washed out. I'm learning Lightroom as I go, not there yet. Here's my edit for you................ mainly just adjusted curves a little, and added a little sharpening and detail. I'm not sure just how much I can edit a jpeg file, I've only worked on raws.

Well if this is a raw file, you can always remove those twigs in its face...

I agree with moving the twigs. Snerd's editing looks good as well. It seems like it is a little bit out of focus around the nose... (do porcupines have noses or snouts?)
