I wasn't happy with the lighting behind the porcupine, so I thought I could save the shot by converting it to Black & White...

I think your idea of BW is right but it still is a bit low contrast.
I suggest you remove some of that redundant forest and then try adding some contrast to the background and foreground.

I took your advice and worked on isolating the lil guy more in the shot while working on the contrast. Here's what I've come up with so far..
