Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens (White Box)

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM

Im looking for a nice wide angle for scenery and hotel shoots (bar, rooms, poolside etc..)

Opinions please? Im no pro obviously and sorry if this is a bad comparison.

Those are two very different lenses.

Firstly, the 30mm is not a wide angle lens...it's about what we would call a 'normal' focal length for your camera. It is a very 'fast' lens though. With a maximum aperture of F1.4, you can get much faster shutter speeds than the other lens, which can be very important. It's also a very sharp lens, and is capable of very high image quality...although it's been known to have focus problems.

The 17-85mm is a decent 'all-around' lens. 17mm is sort of wide (but not really wide) and the range up to 85mm is nice to have. Having IS, is a nice feature, but it's not as good as having a faster shutters speed. This lens does show a fair bit of distortion (compared to high quality lenses) which might be a concern for shooting hotels.
It can be a nice sharp lens, especially when stopped down to F8 or F11.

I have both lenses, and they each have their uses. But if you are really looking for a wide angle for scenery & hotels...I'd suggest the Canon EF-S 10-22mm or the Sigma 10-20mm.

Thanks big mike! I appreciate you taking your time to help me.

Those both seem like great lens but there out of my price range since im also getting a flash, prime 50mm and a 85 mm.
