What's new

Really dumb frustration (pointless - just venting)

I would do night shots, when I get in a can't sleep phase I drive around and look for stuff to shoot at night. It's really amazing how much images change at night from say 5 second exposure to 5 minute. Plus there's always that unknown you can catch like a plane flying through frame that looks like a shooting star. Or you could try 2nd curtain flash in your camera and have fun with some kids and sparklers... lots of options. I personally don't like shooting when it's cold, so I'm pretty much done till I go to Florida.

I'm not saying I can only shoot when the sun is shining...you totally missed my point there. I'm saying I'd like some decent weather (i.e. not pouring rain in pitch black) to work on getting the exposure correct. My house is pretty dim when it's dark outside, so I'd end up having to use the on camera flash, which I keep hearig over and over again is horrible and not to bother. Besides, you can only take so many pictures of stationary objects in your home over and over again. Basically, I'm just saying that I'm sick of crappy weather and feeling like I'm holed up in my house. Just a rant.

There are lots of things you can do if you get a flash, and you can shoot the same thing over and over again with different lighting to get very different looks

Get a flash and go and shoot

That's one of the things I said earlier, though....I can't afford a flash right now. One of my frustrations. I'm hoping that my dad (aka Santa) will be getting me one. lol

Just use a desk lamp, for still life subjects it will work pretty good. This was taken using a desk lamp with a 100 watt Reveal bulb in it, plenty of light to work with.

Can I ask what kind of camera/lens you used for that?? I'm getting really excited for the whole lightbox thing. Hopefully I can find some intresting stuff to take pictures of. lol We're pretty boring in the way of household items.

This is my attempt at indoor night photography. I used a flash bounced off the ceiling but you can do it during the day next to a window or probably with some lights on.

This was without a flash. I set up a white piece of muslin in the background and draped some x-mas lights on it

This one was with a flash.

It will probably help if you have a lens that can open up to f/1.8 but I'm sure with some patience you can get it to work with a kit lens!

There is no skill in using a light box, just use a table and make your own backdrops

I feel your pain. Since daylight savings, I've woken up to darkness and drove home through darkness. Good time to practice night scapes though.

I forgot to add, don't forget about light painting. I've been messing around with a LED flashlight, makeshift snoot/softbox and matchbox cars.
