The circular effect comes from a plugin called "Tiny Planet," which can be found in Photoshop and free editing programs like PhotoScape X and GIMP. The image is, indeed, mirrored.

The object, by the way, is a 100-year-old, transparent glass bowl by the renowned glassblower and one of the former directors of the Dutch Leerdam Glassworks, Andries Copier. What's special about this bowl is its tin crackle effect you can see clearly, which occurs during the glassblowing process. Because the bowl is colorless, I added the blue and green colors myself.
